Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

Picture

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) prevents Type 2 Diabetes through healthy eating, weight loss and regular physical activity. The program provides a supportive environment where other people living with prediabetes work together in a small group led by a trained Lifestyle Coach. For further information , please contact Melissa Biddle at 585-593-5223 ext. 1015 or via email at biddlem@ardentnetwork.org.

What are the risk factors for pre-diabetes?

  • Age; especially being 45 years of age and older;
  • Being overweight or obese;
  • Having a family history of diabetes;
  • Having an African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, or Pacific Indian ethnicity;
  • Having a baby weighing nine pounds or more or being diagnosed with gestational diabetes;
  • Being physically active less than three times per week.

Could I have pre-diabetes?

Knowing whether you are at-risk for prediabetes is as simple as downloading and completing the CDC Pre-diabetes Screening Test.

What is pre-diabetes?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. But, nearly 90 percent of adults who have prediabetes don’t know they have it.

Who is eligible for the Diabetes Prevention Program?

  • At least 18 years of age with a BMI ≥ 24kg/m2?
  • Able to participate in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week?
  • Diagnosed with prediabetes OR at high-risk for prediabetes according to the CDC Pre-diabetes Screening Test?

How can the National Diabetes Prevention Program Help?

  • The year-long program helps participants make real lifestyle changes such as eating healthier, including physical activity into their daily lives, and improving problem-solving and coping skills.
  • Participants meet with a trained lifestyle coach and a small group of people who are making lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes. Sessions are weekly for 6 months and then monthly for 6 months.
  • This proven program can help people with prediabetes and/or at risk for type 2 diabetes make achievable and realistic lifestyle changes and cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.
  • You lose 5% to 7% of your body weight - that is a 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person - through modest lifestyle changes.
