Did You Know?

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among children ages 1 to 19.
  • Children ages 2 to 5 who use safety belts prematurely are four times more likely to suffer a serious head injury in a crash than those in child safety seats or booster seats.
  • Of those children ages 12 and under who died in vehicle crashes in 2011, 31 percent were unrestrained.
  • Children should ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old.

Child Safety Restraints Help Save Lives

Picture
Using a car seat (child safety seat) is the best protection you can give your child when traveling by car. Every state in the United States requires that an infant or small child be restrained. And with good reason — unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children, and most such injuries are automobile crashes.

Child safety seats can substantially reduce the risk of a potentially fatal injury, especially for babies and for toddlers. Yet many safety seats are used incorrectly. When choosing any car seat, following some general guidelines will help ensure a child's safety. The best car seat is not always the most expensive one — it's the one that best fits a child's weight, size, and age, as well as your vehicle.

It's up to you to learn how to install a car safety seat properly and harness your child for the ride. Learn which car seat your child requires by clicking Car Seat Recommendations for Children.

Educational programs are available for community-groups, day care providers, faith-based organizations, healthcare providers and law enforcement officials. For further information on all of Ardent Solutions' Child Safety Seat Program, download our brochure now.

Child Safety Seats and New York State Law

New York is a "primary enforcement" state. A law enforcement officer can issue a traffic ticket just for failure to wear a seat belt. A ticket can be issued to the driver who fails to make sure a child passenger is properly secured in a safety seat or with a seat belt. This law also applies to visitors from outside New York State.
